Mandy Fariello is a mixed media artist who has focused on collage, acrylic painting, and MailArt for the past 20 years. She is inspired by contrasts and juxtapositions- bright colors and rusty bits, shiny and dull, smooth and textured-all with a healthy dose of humor thrown in for good measure.

Much of Mandy’s art revolves around finding new life for discarded books and objects. Her art journey has led to teaching workshops, being published, winning awards and supporting other artists as a member of the board of trustees of the Duxbury Art Association.

During three 10-week sessions throughout the school year, students in grades 1–5 will explore and develop their artistic abilities in a fun, supportive, and nurturing environment. Children are encouraged to express their ideas, experiment creatively, and build confidence in their unique artistic voice.

Students will work with a wide variety of media—including drawing, painting, collage, sculpture, printmaking, and mixed media—while learning foundational art concepts through hands-on projects. Inspiration will come from artists throughout history and from diverse cultures around the world, helping students discover new ways of seeing and creating.

Allison Andrews is an artist and former graphic designer. She earned her Bachelor in Fine Arts from Bridgewater State University and has been teaching art classes for the past 12 years at local libraries and privately. Coming from a family of artists, Allison enjoys painting in watercolor and acrylic. She teaches children and adults and enjoys sharing her love of painting and all things art!

About the Instructor: Ann Musto

Ann began her art career studying with various artists at North River Arts Society, and then completed the full atelier at Boston Academy of Realist Art. She is an award winning artist in both figure and landscape locally and in national competitions. Currently she displays her art at NW Barrett Gallery in Portsmouth, NH, and at the Copley Society in Boston where she is an artist member.

Masters at Work: Marshfield Senior Center Instructor Show (Thursday, November 05, 2026)

We are excited to announce a brand new Satellite Gallery - The Kathleen Riley Memorial Gallery! First to showcase at the gallery will be Marshfield Senior Center's own instructors, Jeanne Brouillette, Fred Dolan & Betty Rogers. The show will be on display at the senior center starting November 5th.

The opening reception is on Thursday, November 5th, 4:00 - 6:00PM

Jeanne Brouillette is a self-taught artist, currently working in watercolors. Her professional career as an educator has led her to teaching watercolor painting at the Marshfield Senior Center, where she enjoys nurturing her student’s creative journey.

Fred Dolan loves painting more than anything, except for his wife Joan. He has been painting for over 80 years. One of his favorite things is to help people get started painting. So many say "I can't even draw a straight line," but he says "You can paint — anybody can." After they get started he says, "See, I told you!"

Betty Rogers is an award winning Signature Artist of the New England Watercolor Society, a Gallery Artist at both the Plymouth Guild and the South Shore Art Center and an active member of the Duxbury Art Association and the North River Art Society. As both student and teacher, Betty has participated in the many opportunities for growth available to emerging artists in the region. She paints weekly with the Tuesdays Painters, en plein aire, weather permitting. Betty also has been the solo artist at Marshfield's Ventress Library and the Bumpus Gallery at the Duxbury Library Selected awards include First Place for Watercolor at the Kingston, Duxbury, Pembroke and North River Art Festivals. Exploring Values with Heather Quay (Saturday, November 07, 2026)

Value is defined as the degree of lightness or darkness of a color. Establishing correct values is critical to creating a strong composition and sense of depth. In this one-day workshop, we will focus on accurately assessing values, learning to reduce an image to a set of limited values and to focus on value shapes rather than discrete objects and colors. As you will discover, “value does the work and color gets the credit!” In the morning, you will create a number of small value studies. In the afternoon, you will create a larger piece, applying the lessons you have learned. All students will have personalized feedback and guidance. This class is appropriate for all levels. While the instructor works in pastel, students in this class are welcome to work in any medium.

Heather Quay

“My goal is to have my paintings capture the feeling of a particular time and place. I have always been fascinated by the way that painters portray the quality and temperature of light. As a pastel painter, I continue to be drawn to scenes where the light is the central character. Whatever I am painting – from landscapes, both natural and manmade, to figures, animals, and portraits – I’m always striving to render the light I see onto the surface of my artwork.”

Heather’s work has been included in national and international juried exhibits, and has won a number of awards. She is an Associate Member of the Pastel Society of America, and a Signature Member of the Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod, the Connecticut Pastel Society, the Central Massachusetts Pastel Society, and the Maryland Pastel Society. She is also a member of the North River Arts Society, the Pastel Society of New Hampshire and the Lyme Art Association. Stuck on a sewing project and need some guidance or motivation? Come to the Open Sewing Studio every second Monday of the month to work alongside other sewing enthusiasts! Hosted by NRAS sewing instructor Olivia Harvey, you’ll be able to ask questions and receive assistance, if desired, to help fine-tune your skills. Bring any project, your sewing machine, and the supplies you need, and let’s get sewing! Please note, this is not a structured class and is intended for those with some prior sewing experience.

Olivia Harvey is an avid sewist and upcycler who first learned how to sew as a kid right here at NRAS with Brooke Stanton — and she hasn’t stopped since! Along with making and embellishing her own clothes, Olivia also sells her upcycled creations through her online shop OHpleeze. She believes that everyone should learn how to sew because it makes life (and your closet) a lot more interesting!

Let’s Paint Holiday Trees! with Kelley MacDonald (Saturday, November 14, 2026)

Jing-Jingle-ing! Get in the spirit of the holidays by gathering to paint together! Join us in creating a couple of small paintings of Holiday Trees that you can keep for yourself or gift.

Bring 2 small canvases or canvas panels (up to 6x8) (I will have some canvas panels on hand if anybody needs them) and a limited palette of paint (I will be using acrylics, and will have enough to share, you can use whatever medium you are comfortable with). Bring waxed paper or a disposable palette and a water container and paper towels and a few brushes (small and medium). I’ll also bring some fun add-ons! We’ll look at all kinds of decorated or lit trees and create a Little Painting of our own! It promises to be lighthearted and fun, to launch us into the Season’s celebration! You can bring photos from your phone that you like. Lunch (pizza) provided, bring beverages!

Kelley MacDonald

After getting her Art History degree at Wheaton College, Kelley continued taking art classes at various Art Associations for 10 years before she started painting. First with watercolor, then oil and now happily with acrylic and mixed media, it has been a lifetime of growing and exploring all things art.

Kelley has won numerous awards, and has taught classes and workshops for many years. While for the majority of her career Kelley has been a literal, representational painter, in the past 4 years she has been diving into abstraction, particularly Intuitive Abstraction. The history involved on the canvas, the multiple layers, the reveal and conceal and push and pull are what attracts her to this method.

A favorite thing to do is to travel, and be inspired by different landscapes and cityscapes. Kelley has traveled to Holland to paint, along with many places on this side of the ocean, namely Nova Scotia, Sedona, Santa Fe, St. Simon’s Island, Seattle, San Miguel de Allende, MX, California and Maine.

]Aside from the Providence Art Club Kelley is a member of the North River Arts Society in Marshfield, MA. She has taught at the Art Club, Bristol Art Museum, and at North River Arts Society.

Our Holiday Art Sale is back!

The North River Arts Society’s Holiday Fine Art Sale will begin with the Preview Party on Friday, December 4, from 6-9pm and will continue on Saturday, December 5, and Sunday, December 6, from 10am-2pm. Sales will also continue the following week during our office hours Monday - Thursday, 9am-1pm!

Shoppers can get first priority and enjoy the festivities at the Preview Party on Friday, December 4, 6-9pm, for $10/each. Enjoy music, bar, and company at the Preview Party fundraising event. PLUS shoppers at the Preview Party will get first dibs on all the artwork and 10% off stage items.

Beginning Drawing 2-The Art of Observation with Sue Casey (Tuesday, January 05, 2027)

In Beginning Drawing 2, you’ll explore how line creates weight and rhythm, how simple shapes help establish proportion, and how shadow shapes reveal mass and form. Ideal, but not necessary, for students who have completed Beginning Drawing 1 and are ready to take their drawing skills to the next level.

- Strathmore drawing pad paper pad 70 lbs. 12'' x 18" or larger

- Pencils: Standard graphite set (2H, HB, 2B, 4B, and 6B).

- Erasers: One kneaded eraser and one white vinyl eraser.

- Extras (but not necessary): pencil sharpener, artist tape, and a 12-inch ruler.

About the Instructor: Sue Casey

Sue Casey is a local artist and educator who studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and earned her degree in Art Education from Rhode Island College. She taught art in the Attleboro Public Schools for more than 30 years, inspiring generations of students through her passion for creativity and learning. Today, Sue devotes much of her time to her own artistic practice while teaching art classes and workshops throughout the South Shore.

Throughout the ages artists have studied with and learned from masters of the craft. In this class we will take a look at artists who’s great skill at painting has been inspirational and influential. We’ll study the different techniques of different artists, some from history, some from the present time, and examine their techniques, figuring out their particular methods of creating paintings. With this knowledge we will create our own paintings… either a copy of one of their works, for our own edification, or paint a subject of our choice using their methods. It will be both fun and challenging and we will all grow from this experience! Best for artists familiar with their medium.

This session will focus on Sorolla, Parrish, O’Keeffe, and Thiebaud.

This class is along the lines of the book ‘Steal Like An Artist” by Austin Kleon, whose book by the same name is a great addition to any artist’s library. Join us and explore techniques that will inspire you and push you to grow your own style!

About the Instructor: Kelley MacDonald

In 2009 Kelley founded the Artists’ Challenge Group “Girls Just Wanna Paint” which is a collection of award winning artists who post a response to a new topic every month consecutively since July of 2009. Aside from the Providence Art Club Kelley is a member of the North River Arts Society in Marshfield, MA. She has taught at the Art Club, Bristol Art Museum, and at North River Arts Society.

This workshop by Liz Haywood-Sullivan is designed to guide artists to the next level in their painting. This intensive three-day experience encourages a more deliberate and thoughtful approach by focusing on essential building blocks that are often overlooked. We begin with the concept of intent, the “why” behind what you choose to paint. Intent influences every aspect of your work, from materials and technique to composition and execution.

Composition and value are often at the heart of painting challenges, and we will address these structural elements through exercises using simplified shapes and clear value patterns. We will also take a deeper dive into reference images, learning how to see more effectively, crop and edit with purpose, and understand the limitations of the camera. Through this process, artists will begin to make stronger, more intentional decisions in their work.

Participants are invited to bring a painting they have struggled with and revisit it using the principles explored in class. Daily demonstrations, individualized instruction, and collaborative discussion will support each artist’s development. Immerse yourself in what makes a painting truly sing.
